It’s hard to believe that we’re in the third month of the year. That disbelief says a lot of things. One big message is that time is accelerating which really means that more and more things are being thrown at us so our mind is actually speeding up. As our mind speeds up, time does get away from us because the traditional resting points – like holidays and vacations – that put us in a position to pause and reflect are usually obliterated or curtailed, and so it’s not surprising that we would find ourselves here in this disbelief. This is probably not the best thing because as our journey into the year gathers momentum it’s really important that we stay engaged so that we carry that momentum forward. AND an important thing to keep in mind is that it doesn’t take as much effort to keep our momentum as it does to originally get it, and that’s why, if we just invest a little bit of time – just the right amount of time by the way – consistently with the things that count in our life (or the 1 to 2 percent that matters as we refer to in the Champions Blueprint model), then we’re able to carry things forward kind of expeditiously.
For example, I met with a very dear friend with whom I also have a business relationship, he’s approaching 50, and I’m approaching 65. I don’t know what that’s supposed to feel like, but in any event, he said, “Man you’re looking good.” I said, “Oh okay.” Well, I really didn’t think about it just because there’s some things I do every day that are just part of what I do and part of the fabric in how I engage life. I don’t need to struggle to do them and it’s not like it takes a lot of time, but I have got to carry that momentum forward.
I think we need to be mindful of our consistent actions and be as selective as possible about where we devote our time and where we devote our interests and our energies for the obvious fact that we can’t do everything. The tendency to believe that if we don’t do everything, then we’re not going to be successful is a myth. I know – it sounds so great and logical to our human mindset, but it doesn’t really happen to be true. It’s really about being able to select those one or two things that count to be able to move forward with certainty that does make the difference.
